Abstract:
Ulric Schmidl was one of the first European explorers to write and publish the account of his journey in the territories that would later be part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. His travel diary, first published in German in 1567, not only provided insight into the indigenous populations of the region, their customs, and their interactions with European explorers, but also illuminated the internal conflicts within the conquest expeditions.
The objective of the Digital Humanities Laboratory at CONICET is to produce a digital tool for the Spanish edition of Schmidl's travels. This project aims at creating a digital edition under the framework of minimal computing, using XML-TEI standards for annotation, creating a controlled vocabulary of the various terminologies present in the text and developing a georeferenced map of the journey.
In this conference, the current state of the project will be presented, along with a brief history of its inception, the challenges encountered during its development, and a broad overview of future activities and objectives.
Kurzbio:
Julián Spinelli ist Historiker und hat an der Universität Buenos Aires seinen Abschluss gemacht, mit Spezialisierung auf Digital Humanities an der UCES. Er ist Mitarbeiter im Digital Humanities Laboratory des CONICET, wo er an verschiedenen DH-Projekten mitwirkt. Als Gastforscher ist er derzeit im Projekt „Computational Approaches to Narrative Space in 19th and 20th Century Novels“ (CANSpiN) an der Universität Rostock tätig.
