Abstract:
Recently my Canadian university abandoned its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI - what is known in Australian as EDI). How did we get here? How did I get here?
The answer is: slowly but surely.
What seems at first glance to be a dramatic capitulation of knowledge institutions—the shocking cancellation of equity-driven research enquiry and university programs committed to social justice, the overnight mass sackings of librarians and archivists and scientists—perhaps the signs were already there. This talk will provide a personalised perspective on digital information infrastructure in what is shaping to be an destructive era of social injustice and institutional collapse.

Prof. Deb Verhoeven gilt als eine der führenden Expertinnen im Bereich neuer netzwerkbasierter Methoden zur Analyse von Ungleichheiten in den Kulturindustrien. Seit 2019 hat sie den Lehrstuhl für Gender und Cultural Informatics an der University of Alberta in Kanada inne. In ihrer Arbeit entwickelt sie einen innovativen, datengestützten Ansatz, den sie als Social Justice Network Analysis (SJNA) bezeichnet: „SJNA can identify patterns of unequal relationships in large data sets. This tool enables researchers, activists, and policymakers to analyze equal opportunities.“ Der Fokus liegt dabei nicht nur auf Individuen, sondern auch auf Verbindungen, Gemeinschaften, Netzwerken und Kohorten. Seit 2020 ist Deb Verhoeven Mitglied des Beirats des Departments „Wissen – Kultur – Transformation“ (WKT) an der Interdisziplinären Fakultät der Universität Rostock. Vom 15. März bis 10. Mai ist die in Australien geborene Forscherin Mare Balticum Fellow an der Universität Rostock.
